Qualifying exam
The qualifying exam at the PPGEE consists of submitting a text, in pre-dissertation format, and a public oral presentation (30 to 50 minutes) on the progress of the student's research project. Both the text and the presentation must contain:
1) an introduction summarizing the fundamental bibliography
2) objectives
3) material and methods
4) partial results
5) brief discussion or considerations
Bibliographical references are only required in the qualification text
Deadline
The PPGEE student must take the qualifying exam between the 12th and 18th month of the master's degree, from the date of initial regsitration A request to extend this deadline can be submitted for analysis by the CEPG in a document sent by the supervisor, with the appropriate justification.
Examining board
The supervisor must submit a list containing 4 nominations of professors with at minimum Master's degree, which must be sent to the PPGEE secretariat at least 30 days before the date indicated for the qualifying exam (see form for requesting the exam board). The CEPG must analyze the request for a qualifying exam, on which it will nominate the names of 2 professors from this list to make up the judging panel for the qualifying exam, with the other members being alternates. The supervisor is a natural member of the judging panel for the qualifying exam. At least one of the members of the qualifying exam judging panel must be external to the PPGEE. The participation of the co-supervisor in the judging committee of the qualifying exam in which the respective advisor participates is forbidden.
Exam
The qualifying exam may take place in person or remotely, by videoconference, as indicated by the supervisor and the student in agreement with the members appointed to the examining board. After the oral presentation, each member of the examining board will have a maximum of 30 (thirty) minutes to argue.
